A Ministry for Artificial Intelligence? The world leaders in this field are the United Arab Emirates that have appointed the 27-year-old Omar Bin Sultan Al Olama at the head of this unusual ministry.
We know little about him: born in 1990, Al Olama has been working as the Deputy Director of the Future Department for just over a year now, and when he was only 24 he became a member of the Executive Committee of the World Government Summit, the annual summit held in Dubai dedicated to entrepreneurs from the public and private sectors, as well as to thought leaders, scholars and figures of an international calibre, like Elon Musk, Jim Kim or Christine Lagarde who have been invited, among others, to its 2018 edition¬ scheduled for next February.
This Ministry is part of a broader and certainly very ambitious project: to turn the United Arab Emirates into the AI leading country in the world. The projects envisaged in the short term include the digitalization of paper transactions by 2021, the implementation and widespread use of driverless transportation and the 75% increase in energy production from clean sources. The long-term projects are more futuristic: to establish the first inhabitable human settlement in Mars by 2117.
