They are called Competence Centers and represent the Italian Government's answer to the need to provide the Country with excellence hubs that can transfer the right technological skills to SMEs: this is the reason for the call for bids proposed by the Minister of Economic Development Carlo Calenda, and already included in the Industry/Enterprise 4.0 National Plan, dedicated to projects for the creation of innovation and smart specialisation hubs.

According to the call for bids, the Competence Centres must take the shape of a public-private partnership and must include at least one research body and one or more companies that are active in training and guiding companies (especially SMEs) and in implementing innovation, industrial research and experimental development projects in Industry 4.0. The bids can be submitted from 1 February 2018 to midnight, 30 April 2018. “The transformation processes under way - said the Minister - call for substantial investments, also and especially in skills and professional training, where we are currently lagging behind the major European countries”.
